The EU Commission kicked off a fresh series of trilateral gas talks between Russia, Ukraine and the EU. The objective is clear – to agree, by June, on a successor to the “Winter 2014/2015 Package” for Ukrainian gas purchases from Russia. EU officials obviously prefer to sit at the table of any gas negotiations given that the EU receives about a third of its gas from Russia, with around half that amount crossing Ukraine based on 2013 IEA numbers.
