New storage facility for used nuclear fuel was opened in Chernobyl exclusion zone

The storage facility was built with the financial help of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (GBP 11.3 million) and EU (EUR 2 million). The total capacity of the radioactive materials, which could be placed in the storage facility, may exceed 1 million curies.
Construction of the facility lasted for seven years and it will start its operation by the end of this year after completion of certification procedures. The constructed storage facility is one of the most modern facilities in Europe, capable of safekeeping the alpha-, beta-, gamma-emitting elements, as well as neutron radiation sources. The new storage facility will ensure safe keeping of these materials for, at least, next 50 years.  Read more at http://www.ukrinform.ua
